Necklace Length Guide: Which Chain Length Suits Which Outfit

Chain length changes how a pendant sits relative to your neckline, your face and your clothing. It is the most under-considered choice in jewelry.
The lengths
- 14–16in (choker) — sits at the base of the throat. Best with open necklines and for layered looks.
- 18in (princess) — the default. Falls just below the collarbone and suits almost every neckline.
- 20in (matinee) — sits on the upper chest. Good over a crew neck or a buttoned shirt.
- 24in (opera) — below the bust line. Dramatic, and works over knitwear.
- 30in+ (rope) — can be doubled. Statement territory.
Matching neckline to length
A V-neck wants a pendant that follows the V — 18–20in. A crew neck wants 20–24in so the necklace sits on fabric rather than skin. A strapless or sweetheart neckline suits 16–18in.
Layering without tangling
- Keep at least 2in between the lengths of two chains
- Make the shortest chain the lightest
- Anchor the longest chain with a slightly heavier pendant so it does not drift
