Earring Styles Explained: Studs, Hoops, Huggies and Drops
Earrings frame the face, so proportion matters more than trend. Here is the practical breakdown.
Studs
The safest and most versatile. Sit flat against the lobe, suit short hair and high necklines, and work in almost any size. A 5–7mm round stud is the classic everyday scale.
Hoops
Small hoops (under 25mm) read as casually elegant; large hoops (50mm+) are a statement and need a simpler outfit. Hoops flatter long faces especially.
Huggies
Small hoops that hug the lobe, often with a hinge clasp. Excellent for second and third piercings, and comfortable enough to sleep in.
Drops and dangles
Move with you and catch light. They add length to the face, so they flatter round and square face shapes most. Avoid with very short hair and very large shoulders at the same time — proportion gets lost.
Quick matching rules
- Round face: drops and long styles
- Long face: studs and hoops
- Short hair: anything, but drops show best
- Very fine lobes: keep weight down and choose screw-backs
