How to Match Stones for a Pair of Earrings

A pair of earrings is only as good as how well the two stones match. Mismatched studs are immediately noticeable, even to someone who cannot name the difference.

The three things that must match

• Colour — the hardest to judge. Two stones of identical grade can still differ visibly in tone.
• Measurement — width and depth should match within about 0.1mm; depth affects how high the stone sits.
• Cut — same facet pattern. Mixing a brilliant and a crushed-ice stone makes the pair flash differently under light.

Why pairs cost more than singles

Matching means selecting two stones from the same cut batch and often discarding candidates that are close but not close enough. That selection work is why a matched pair carries a premium over two individual stones.

What to order

Specify: shape, millimetre size, colour and clarity grade, cut style, and 'matched pair' explicitly. Ask for a photograph of both stones side by side before dispatch.

Setting tips

Four-prong basket settings show the most stone; bezels hide small differences in outline. Screw-back posts are worth specifying for anything worn daily.
