Lab-Grown Diamond Prices: What You Should Pay Per Carat

Lab-grown diamond pricing is far more transparent than mined, but it still swings widely by grade. Here is where the money goes.

Rough per-carat ranges

• 0.5ct round, G–H VS: roughly $250–400
• 1.0ct round, G–H VS: roughly $400–700
• 1.5ct oval, F–G VS: roughly $600–1,000
• 2.0ct emerald cut, E–F VS: roughly $900–1,500

Fancy shapes cost less per carat than rounds because they waste less rough.

Three places to save

• Colour: drop from D to G — invisible in a gold setting, meaningfully cheaper.
• Clarity: VS instead of VVS — both eye-clean, VS is materially cheaper.
• Shape: oval, emerald and pear give more face-up size per carat than round.

Where not to save

Cut. A badly proportioned stone looks dull no matter what the certificate says. Prioritise excellent/ideal cut above everything.
