Birthstone Jewelry Guide: Every Month and What to Buy

Birthstone jewelry is one of the easiest gifts to get right — and one of the easiest to get wrong if you ignore hardness.
The modern list
- January — Garnet (deep red, 7–7.5)
- February — Amethyst (purple, 7)
- March — Aquamarine (pale blue, 7.5–8)
- April — Diamond (10) — lab-grown works beautifully here
- May — Emerald (7.5–8)
- June — Pearl, alexandrite, moonstone
- July — Ruby (9)
- August — Peridot, spinel
- September — Sapphire (9)
- October — Opal, tourmaline (7–7.5)
- November — Citrine, topaz
- December — Tanzanite, zircon (7.5)
Choosing the piece by hardness
Stones at 8.5+ can go in rings. Stones at 7–8 are best in pendants, earrings or a bezel-set ring — see the hardness chart.
Gift-safe options
If you do not know the wearer's taste, a pendant or a pair of studs avoids sizing entirely and suits almost everyone. Add engraving for a personal touch.
