How to Care for Emerald, Paraiba, Sapphire & Ruby Jewelry

Coloured gemstones are softer and more varied than diamond, so a single cleaning method does not suit all of them.

The safe routine

Warm water, one drop of mild dish soap, a soft baby toothbrush. Brush gently behind the stone, rinse, pat dry with a lint-free cloth.

Emerald is different

Emerald is traditionally oiled to fill surface fractures. Never use an ultrasonic cleaner or steam on emerald, and never soak it for long periods — both can strip the treatment.

Sapphire, ruby and paraiba

At 9 on the Mohs scale, sapphire and ruby are tough and tolerate ultrasonic cleaning. Paraiba is softer (7.5) — clean it by hand only.

Storage

Store coloured pieces separately, in a soft pouch. Diamond and sapphire will scratch emerald, pearl and opal if they knock together.
